Harmonized Coding System and Commodity Description refer to the Harmonized System of Nomenclature or simply HSN. This is a multipurpose global product nomenclature developed by the WCO (World Customs Organization).
This organization has 181 members and most of them are developing countries, responsible for keeping more than 98% of world trade.
HS code India has been using to classify the goods for Central Excise and Customs since 1986. It has a six-digit code and categorizes more than 5,000 goods which are accepted globally. Later, two more digits were added for better differentiation at customs and excise which resulted in the eight-digit code.
In six-digit HS code, the first two digits offer chapter number; the next two digits offer the heading number and the last two digits give sub-heading number.
The HSN Codes India is divided into 21 sections along with 96 chapters in every section and each chapter is divided into around 5,000 headings and subheadings. All the chapters and sections have large categories of products which then get more specific in every heading and subheading. With sections, chapters, headings, and subheadings, things can get very detailed and simple.
